“Clarksville Conversations” Speaker Series
Sunday, March 9th, 2:00-3:00PM. Tara Dudley, Assistant Professor of Architecture at UT, Austin, will discuss Cumberland type homes in Clarksville and Austin's other freedom colonies/Black neighborhoods (The Haskell House is a Cumberland style home.) She will also talk about the Black builders/craftsmen who lived in Clarksville during its early years.
Saturday, April 12, 2:00-3:00PM. Floris Cedel, an elder from the Manchaca Freedom Colony, will talk about the foodways in early Texas Freedom Colonies, like Clarksville — the kinds of food people grew, how they prepared their food and the origins of that food. Attendees will be invited to share their memories of the food their ancestors grew and cooked. Stephanie Lang, a well-known expert on Black history in Austin and nearby communities will facilitate the event. Also, Kurt Schmidt, a member of the Clarksville Community Gardener, will talk about the new Haskell Heritage Garden.
